Addu City, Maldives – Two individuals have been fined by Addu City Council, for illegally mining sand from the Hankede area of the city.
According to the council, the pair fined for the offense are Ali Nimaal, Fathihahfolheymaage and Ahmed Anas, Gulfaamge, both from Maradhoo, Addu City. Both are reported to have been fined by MVR 500 each.
Both Nimaal and Anas were fined under section (9), part (a) of the Environmental Protection Regulation, for mining sand illegally from the Eastern side of Handkede area – an uninhibited part of the city which connects Maradhoo and Hithadhoo.
The council has warned both individuals to refrain from repeating any such activity, and has notified them to submit the amount to Maradhoo Ward Office with in a duration of 10 days. The notice also read that any violation of this notice would result in action being taken against them, as stated in part 140 of the Decentralization Act.
Earlier in September, the council filed three individuals from Hithadhoo, also for illegal sand mining, which saw all three being fined by MVR 4,000 each as it was a repeated violation.
