Male’, Maldives – Leader of Jumhooree Party and member of Maamigili Constituency, Qasim Ibrahim has said that he is still with the citizens and the current government in a tweet he posted a short while ago.

He said this as he tweeted a fake tweet made under his name calling out to free the Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom who is in jail for money laundering charges. Qasim said that the tweet was a fake and that it was an attempt to depopularize the support to him and his party.

While Qasim made the statement that he is with the government, in a press conference earlier this year president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stated that Qasim would never make a coalition with Former President Yameen and that Qasim would undoubtedly stay as a coalition partner of this government.

“Qasim will stay as a coalition partner. There’s no doubt about that. I don’t see him making a coalition with President Yameen. And he wouldn’t” President Solih said.

Qasim Ibrahim was arrested in April 2017 during Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration on charges of bribery and attempting to influence the vote against parliament speaker Abdulla Maseeh held on 27th March and his deputy Moosa Manik (Reeko Moosa). In addition to this the Criminal Court order to arrest him at the time stated that Qasim’s actions showed that he is working to unlawfully topple an elected government and that it was deemed a threat to national security.
