Malé, Maldives — The First Lady of Maldives, Fazna Ahmed has released a child friendly booklet regarding the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
The booklet was released via Facebook and Twitter Live video at 1630hrs of 12th October, by First Lady Fazna. The Executive Director of ARC, Zeena Zahid and the Country Representative of UNICEF, Dr. Munir Safieldin also joined First Lady Fazna in the Live video.
While speaking at the booklet releasing event, First Lady Fazna highlighted the complementary nature of CEDAW and the Convention on the Rights of Child (CRC). She also stressed on the importance of educating about the Conventions to both boys and girls to ensure that they know the fundamental rights that children of all ages must have.
The Executive Director of ARC, Zeena Zahid mentioned in the video that letting girls have equal opportunities as boys will not only be benificial to the girls, but also to their families, the society and the nation as well.
Meanwhile the UNICEF Country Representative Dr. Munir Safieldin expressed his thoughts stating that the knowledge of having CEDAW will furnish the ground for girls’ as they will know their rights and aspirations. He mentioned that this will further help in highlighting this year’s theme, ‘My voice, our equal future’.
This child friendly CEDAW booklet was developed in collaboration with Advocating the Rights of Children (ARC) and UNICEF to mark this year’s International Day of the Girl Child. It talks about the rights guaranteed by the Convention, along with the responsibilities of the state to fulfil these rights.
