Meedhoo, Addu City – Member of Parliament for Addu Meedhoo constituency Rozaina Adam, has revealed that extermination efforts of crows in Addu City will begin on Sunday.

Rozaina revealed the news on Twitter, saying that the information was relied to her by Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), which will be carrying out the process via shooting. “The hope is that White Terns are freed from the crows as soon as possible.” she said.

She also thanked the Minister of Defense Force, Mariya Ahmed Didi for her cooperation in making the arrangement.

The action comes approved from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which granted the approval to exterminate the crows via the defense system of the country based on the grounds that crows are not native to Addu City, and hence can be considered a pest as they pose a threat to the White Terns which are native to the city and a protected under the Environmental Protection and Preservation Act (4/93).

As of recent time, crows which were introduced to Addu city by a group of people who authorities have been unable to identify, have taken residence in the city and have been observed to be attacking the White Terns, which are already declining in number. Many have raised concerns over the fact that crows have been sighted eating away at the White Terns as well.

The complaints were raised to the City Council and the local MPs, which have since worked on getting the necessary action to remedy the issue.
