Malé, Maldives — Speaker of Parliament, Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the courts of Maldives were made into dens of corruption by the Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

The statement from the Speaker comes after Yameen sent a message to PPM/PNC members saying that he will bring appropriate changes to the judiciary and legislative branches of the country. Yameen also stated that he will free Judicial Service Commission (JSC) from the grip of the political members.

As a response to the Former President Yameen’s message, Speaker Nasheed tweeted that the citizens of Maldives are well aware that it was with Yameen’s participation and instructions that the courts of Maldives became a den of corruption. He also stated that the country went into bankruptcy due to the former president Yameen.

As President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih pledged to reform the Judiciary branch of Maldives, the government has been inspecting the issues of several judges, taking appropriate steps against them and has also removed several judges from their positions. Till date, the government has changed the 19th parliament members, JSC members and the entire bench of the Supreme Court to reform the Judiciary branch.

However, the opposition party has been causing disturbance to JSC members and has also accused the government saying that they are pressuring the Judicial members to take the decisions that the government desires.
