Bonda withdraws from Local Council Election

Addu City, Maldives – Shamweel Qasim (Bonda) has changed his decision to contest in the upcoming Local Council Elections, has has withdrawn his name from the running.

Bonda’s withdrawal from the election was announced on the website of the Elections Commission, although Bonda’s campaign team or Bonda has not officially announced this yet. It is also unknown the exact reason as to why Bonda decided against contesting in the elections.

The Local Council Elections, which also included the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections were initially scheduled to be held in April, but were postponed due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. However, since then, the Elections Commission has announced that efforts are underway to hold the elections during March of the upcoming year.

During this time, many candidates have withdrawn their candidacy from both elections, such as another candidate from Addu who was running on a ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) ticket for Addu Meedhoo constituency.
