K. Maafushi, Maldives – Since the reopening of guesthouses on the 15th of October, over 1,100 tourists have visited Maafushi island, one of the leading guesthouse islands in the country.
Maafushi Health Centre reported that starting from 15th October till yesterday, 2nd December, a total of 1,137 tourists visited the island, out of which 11 tourists tested positive for Covid-19 and there are currently six active cases in the island and hence the percentage of tourists testing positive for the virus in the island is 0.97 percent.
Guesthouses in inhabited islands were initially closed on March 17th due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This resulted in a huge loss to the guesthouse industry and tourism in Maldives itself. The guesthouses later reopened on October 15 as Maldives tries to overcome the loss in tourism. Till now Tourism Ministry has given approval to 130 guesthouses to reopen their services.
Maafushi is currently home to the biggest guesthouse in the Maldives, which has a total 253 rooms, an event hall with the capacity of 130 people, an infinity pool, spa and other recreational activities, all within the 12 story building. With this, the bed capacity owned by Kaani company has gone up to 455, and that of Maafushi island to 1,627 which is why Maafushi is one of the leading guesthouse islands in Maldives.
