Male’, Maldives – Hithadhoo North Constituency Member of Parliament Ibrahim Nazil has said that while the government has not received any profit from Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort & Spa even though with a thirty percent stake in the business.
Speaking at todays Parliamentary meeting, MP Nazil stated that while even though the government holds a thirty percent stake in Shangri-La Villingili Resort & Spa, the resort does not seem to have any success.
“Without Shangri-La succeeding, Addu residents cannot succeed. This has been reiterated during many governments, but no development or solution has been seen” MP Nazil said.
MP Nazil added that methods to improve Addu’s tourism must be provided through policy changes. He noted that some the most experienced individuals in the tourism industry are Addu people and that the government must pave the way for these people to contribute to Addu’s tourism.
Shangri-la Villingili Resort and Spa announced that it will be ceasing all operations of the facility for an indefinite period .With Canareef resort also closed for 2 years, this leaves only Equator Village, South Palm and a handful of guesthouses operating in Addu City.
Residents of Addu City have started signing a petition to be sent to Parliament, to ensure rights of workers left jobless after Shangri-la Villingili Resort and Spa and Canareef ceased operations due to Covid-19
