Male’, Maldives – Former Member for Parliament for Villimale Constituency Ahmed Nihan’s passport has been seized today, after suspicions of him being involved in the high profile MMPRC corruption scandal have been raised.
Some news outlets reported earlier that NIhan’s passport was taken form him at the airport, where he was about to depart. Nihan later said that this was completelt false, and that he has no reservation let alone intentions to travel abroad.
He has stated that all of this is an attempt to frame him and smear his name.
While the Asset Recovery Commission has interrogated Nihan earlier this October on the MMPRC scandal, President of the Parliamentary Committee on Independent institutions Ahmed Assad has said huge issues related to the scandal are ready to be sent to court, adding that the commission has employed new members to investigate the new developments quickly.
Nihan, currently a member of Jumhooree Party, had campaigned for, and lost the ticket to Thinadhoo North Constituency by a landslide.
