Malé, Maldives – Former Chief Justice Dr. Ahmed Abdullah Didi stated that the story of judges being arrested by taking Supreme Court’s roof sheets off with the orders of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom is not true.

The statement from Didi comes after former MP of Feydhoo constituency, Alhan Fahmy stated that the issue of two judges being arrested by taking the roof sheets off the roof of the Supreme Court needs to be investigated again.

On February 5, 2018, former President Yameen declared a state of emergency and ordered the arrest of two judges of the Supreme Court of Maldives, Chief Justice, Abdulla Saeed along with the most senior judge who was in the court back then, Ali Hameed for being accused of trying to overthrow the government.

Alhan stated that the two most important things that needs to be looked into in the Transitional Justice Act is the issue of Abdullah Mohamed being arrested during the presidency of Mohamed Nasheed and the issue of police taking the roof sheets off the roof of the Supreme Court and entering the court with the order of Yameen to arrest two judges of the Supreme Court.

However, Didi opposed Alhan’s statement and tweeted saying the story of taking the roof sheets off the roof is not true.

The actual matter that needs to be looked into is the accusations on the people that said that they were partnering up with judges to bring down the legitimate government.

Didi stated.

In addition to this, on February 5, 2018, former President Yameen also ordered police to arrest his half-brother, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and his son-in-law Moamed Nadheem over charges of trying to overthrow the government.
