Wedding cluster: more than 90 confirmed positive

Male’, Maldives – The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has stated the number of individuals that have tested positive for Covid-19 in the SHE bidding wedding cluster, have increased yet again- bringing the number of confirmed cases to 92.

The Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC) has collected more than 260 samples in the contact tracing process of this particular cluster- that reportedly originated from one attendee with coronavirus symptoms, who went to the wedding that was attended by a total of 120 people.

On December  24th, HPA confirmed the first Covid-19 case from the wedding cluster. While only one citizen tested positive for the virus that day, 12 people had tested positive on the following day, 21 people on 26th December, 8 people on 27th December and additional 8 people on 28th December, with another 13 on December 29.

HPA said that among the positive cases, there are some high-risk patients. The ages of the infected people relating to the wedding cluster include 24 children under the age of 18, in addition to a 65 year old and a 77 year old. In addition to this, HPA also informed that two toddlers of the age 2 and 3 are also confirmed as positive for the virus.

13,930 people have tested positive for Covid-19 till now in Maldives. While 13,217 people have recovered from the disease, 49 people including Former judge Mujthaz have passed away due to the virus. While Maldives attempts to arise from the losses of the pandemic, health officials urge to public to remain vigilant as to prevent the possibility of another outbreak.
