Male’, Maldives- Just one week after school’s reopened in Maldives and the greater Male’ region, A teacher from Ghaazee School (GS), and a Jamaluddin School (JS) student have tested positive for Covid-19.
The Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC) has revealed that GS teacher taught the first grade, and there have been 12 contacts identified who are all teachers.
The JS student is a 9th grader according to HEOC, with 4 students identified as close contacts in HEOC’s contact tracing efforts.
In addition to these, HEOC also revealed earlier that 4 Billabong High student’s have tested positive for the disease, in addition to a Aminiya School teacher.
A noticeable increase has been observed in Covid-19 cases since the second term of the academic year started on the 10th of January, but Minister of Education Aishath Ali has urged parents to send their children to school, asserting that the preventive measures in place would prevent outbreaks in schools. More than 14,000 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the Maldives, with the number of deaths at 49.
