Malé, Maldives — The Maldives Immigration Office has informed that Maldives has welcomed over half a million tourists in 2020.

The statistics for 2020 released by Maldives Immigration showed that in 2020, Maldives had welcomed 555,499 tourists into the country. Out of these, 551,842 tourists arrived to the Velana International Airport and 2,530 tourists to the Gan International Airport.

The statistics showed that although the country had recorded over 200,000 tourists during the first quarter of 2020, it rapidly decreased to zero by April as Maldives had closed its International borders due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Since then the number of tourist arrivals remaining at 0 until the borders reopened on July 15, 2020.

Despite the reopening of borders, the number of tourist arrivals per month remained lower than 50,000 until the very last month of 2020. In December 2020, there was a steep rise in the number of tourists arrivals into the country recording up to 100,000 tourist arrivals as well.

As the country depends solely on its tourism sector, since the international borders of Maldives were reopened, the Tourism Ministry has been proactively taking measures to promote tourism in the country including promotional events and high safety standards in the tourism sector to prevent spreading of Covid-19 virus in the resorts and other tourist facilities.
