Man sentenced to 10 years in prison for stabbing

Male’, Maldives – The Criminal Court has sentenced a local man to 10 years in prison, after he confessed to stabbing someone in the neck.

Zulmahasin Mohamed of M. Everfree, Male’, was charged with assault using a sharp-edged weapon in a manner that could result in grievous bodily harm, after he stabbed Ahmed Shamaal of M. Asal, Male’, in the neck with a five inch knife on a street in Male’ at approximately 08:30 pm on September 23, 2020.

The State presented a medical legal report detailing the injury sustained by Shamaal in the assault as evidence. Assaults using such sharp edged instruments or weapons in a manner that could result in grievous bodily harm is punishable by 10 to 15 years in prison. Zulmahasin pleaded guilty to the charge during pre-trial hearings.

He plead guilty under a plea deal between him and the Prosecutor General’s Office, negotiating to reduce his sentence to 10 years in prison which is the minimum punishment for the charge in exchange for his confession. Criminal Court Judge Hassan Saeed accepted the plea deal based on Zulmahasin’s statement he signed the plea deal while of sound mind and free will, free from any coercion and on January 25 sentenced Zulmahasin to 10 years in prison.
