Malé, Maldives – Referring to claims that Congress Member of People’s National Congress (PNC) Shaheed Ibrahim was injured at the hands of Maldives Police Service, the opposition coalition, which includes PNC, has described the events as acts which need to be investigated by the National Integrity Commission and the Human Rights Commission.
In a statement released with regards to their claims, the opposition claimed that the injuries were inhumane and that action needs to be taken with regards to the matter as soon as possible. Their claims also extended towards the Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameed, stating that the actions of officers that night were as per the direct orders of CP Hameed, disguised as an attempt to arrest.
The statement further referred to the right to express opinions peacefully, citing that more than 50 individuals have been arrested during various protests held by by the opposition, in violation of this right, and stated that all such acts will be investigated after the end of this administration.
Concluding the statement, the coalition said that the arrests and injuries caused by Maldives Police Service shows that the current administration is about to fall, and that the public is losing confidence in the current ruling party, Maldives Democratic Party (MDP).
