Opposition calls on President, Govt to not evade responsibility over 13 year old’s murder

Malé, Maldives – The opposition coalition consisting of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) has criticised the government calling out for them to not evade responsibility under different excuses in relation to a 13 year old being found dead early Tuesday.

The political coalition said that measures to ensure national security and convict the perpetrators of the 13 year old must be reinforced.

The opposition noted that while the security and safety of the citizens is a mandatory responsibility of the state, such inhumane acts continue to occur due to negligence from the relevant authorities, starting from the President himself.

They also added that the relevant authorities must actively engage in providing psychological help to the family of the deceased, which going through immense mental distress at the moment. They noted that it is important for the investigative authorities to reveal the reason behind the murder of the 13 year old and what the authority did to find the boy following the initial reports of kidnapping.

Authorities have revealed that the deceased body was uncovered in Hulhumalé.

The child’s family had filed a report over the child’s kidnapping with the Police on June 20, 2021. According to Maldives Police Service, following a 48-hour search, the body was located at approximately 02:38. Further sources have alleged that the body was brought in from the lagoon.

Police also stated that two arrests were made in connection to the murder and kidnapping. At present, the suspects are another minor aged 17 and an adult aged 27.

Since, local media ‘Mihaaru’ has reported that the two individuals were known to be friends with the young victim.
