Malé, Maldives – Spokesperson of Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) Dr. Nazla Rafyg said that Covid-19 is not a normal thing and that situation may go out of control if people continue to assume so.
While speaking at last night’s press conference, Dr. Nazla said that although daily cases of Covid-19 have risen above 100, some people do not find this a big issue and that they regard it as normal. She said that however, there are many health workers working hard away from their families without a holiday and that health professionals understand the situation of these workers.
For us, this is not a normal thing at all. Regarding the situation as normal is just letting it go out of control.

Dr. Nazla further said that other countries with the same number of positive cases as Maldives, have much larger number of people hospitalised and higher death numbers compared to Maldives. She added that the situation in Maldives is not as bad as in those countries due to lots of hard work from many people.
In addition to this, Dr. Nazla noted that everytime there is a surge in the number of positive cases, other medical services are also being temporarily stopped which results in many inconveniences. She stressed that the month of Ramadan is coming soon and that last Ramadan was spent in a very bad situation. She advised everyone to maintain their behaviour such that the situation in Maldives does not return to the stage it was back in last Ramada.
While the number of daily cases of Maldives has greatly increased, 184 positive cases of Covid-19 was recorded yesterday only. 145 of these cases were recorded in capital city Malé.
