Addu City, Maldives – Minister of Tourism, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has landed in Addu City on an official trip. The Minister was received at Gan International Ariport by Addu City Mayor Abdulla Sodiq and Councillors of the city.

Minister Mausoom has previously stated that the tourism industry of Addu City – a heart shaped atoll at the very bottom of the Maldives – will see more progress in the upcoming five years than it did during the past 38 years.

All the major events that will be held in Maldives for the World Tourism Day of 2021 also be held in Addu City according to the Minister.

Currently, the city’s tourism is suffering due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which caused the two main resorts operating in the city to be indefinitely shit down, while guesthouses also incur insurmountable losses with international flights not operating to the Gan International Airport.

With this, only a handful of tourist establishments such as the Equator Village and Wave Sound by 3S, as well as some other guest houses are actively in operation, meaning that the city only receives mere peanuts in via tourism.

The Minister addressed the issue in January, saying that efforts are being directed towards reemploying the workers in Addu who faced unemployment during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The Minister also made a pit-stop in Fuvahmulah City on the way to Addu City earlier today and said that Fuvahmulah has great potential for domestic and international tourism as well.
