Malé, Maldives – MP of Naifaru constituency and Deputy Leader of PPM, Ahmed Shiyam has tested positive for Covid-19.
He is the second member of the Maldives Parliament to test positive for the virus. Parliamentary Group leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), and MP of Malé Medhu Henveyru constituency Ali Azim has tested positive for Covid-19 on 10 March 2021.
While officials of the parliament’s administrative services confirmed the news, they did not share the exact date MP Shiyam tested positive or if he had any direct contact in the parliament.
MP Shiyam recently attended opposition protests held in Malé.
With the third wave in progress in the country, daily recorded cases have on average been over 100 everyday. 140 positive cases were recorded yesterday and the total active cases in the country stands at 2,436. Subsequently, he total number of Covid-19 cases recorded in the country has reached 22,513 out of which 20,004 patients have made full recoveries, as of 18:00 of March 21, 2021.
