Malé, Maldives – The Parliamentary Group leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), MP Ali Azim has tested positive for Covid-19.

Local media outlet ‘The Press” reported that Azim has confirmed that he has tested positive for the coronavirus sometime during Tuesday night. He is also reported to be symptomatic.

While this is so, Azim and many of his fellow Parliamentary Members had celebrated Azim’s birthday at the Parliament just a week or so back, on the first of March. Participants of the celebration included MPs of the ruling party MDP as well as those from the opposition.

While roughly around 20 members are said to have participated in this celebration, no other MPs are reported to have tested positive for the virus as of yet.

As the celebration was held eight days back, despite Azim’s current health status, those who participated in the event would not be considered as direct contacts according to the guidelines of Health Protection Agency (HPA) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC).
