Minister Mausoom attends UNWTO Global Tourism Crisis Committee meeting

Male’, Maldives – The Minister of Tourism, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom, has participated in the fifth virtual meeting of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Global Tourism Crisis Committee Technical Group.

The virtual meeting took place on March 22, 2021. Dr. Abdulla Mausoom joined the meeting in his capacity as the incumbent chair of UNWTO South Asia. Maldives was also represented at the meeting by Senior Executive Director of Tourism Ministry, Ali Razzaan.

The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss solutions to the challenges faced by the global tourism industry due to the Covid-19 pandemic, rebooting the tourism industry, and ensuring employment stability for employees within the industry.

Discussions continued on setting the new scenario to restart tourism and recommendations on ensuring safe tourism for travellers and introducing vaccination e-certificates.

Minister Mausoom shared information on the tourism recovery strategies used by the Maldives and shared, highlighting the joint efforts of tourism industry and the health sector.

The executive director of UNWTO Dr. Manuel Butler Halter also addressed the team in the meeting, while other representatives also shared their views and experiences.

This technical team was established by the UNWTO to investigate and find solutions to the problems that have emerged in the global Tourism Industry due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
