GDh. Thinadhoo will be developed as a business hub: President Solih

Malé, Maldives – President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that GDh. Thinadhoo will be developed as a major business hub with the development of the new commercial port.

Speaking at the virtual meeting of ‘Rahvehi fathis’ campaign event with the candidates of South Huvadhoo atoll, President Solih said that with the development of the new port in GDh. Thinadhoo, the island will be developed as the economic hub of the region and that major development will be seen in the area.

Thinadhoo is an island which we have decided to develop as a business/ economic hub. The port being developed in the island now will be a commercial one.

President also added that with the port being developed at the industrial zone on the east side of the island, international cargo boats can alongside the main harbor to directly offload the cargo to the island.

The contract for the development of a regional port at GDh. Thinadhoo was awarded to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) on December 22, 2020.

While the first component includes dredging 45,000 cubic metres, concreting an area of 3,000 square metres and installing a drainage system, the second component includes construction of an administrative building and a 5,000 square-feet warehouse.

The development of Thinadhoo port was announced after the start of cargo ferry operations between Tuticorin of India to Addu City and GDh. Huvadhoo by Maldives State Shipping Limited (MSS) in December 2020.
