Malé, Maldives – Maldives Ministry of Gender and Family has revealed that 186 cases were filed at the Ministry, with 92 abuse cases and 25 child sexual abuse cases.

This information comes in the wake of public protests after a 14 year old school girl was raped.

Gender inequality crimes, verbal and physical were both attended by the Ministry, with a higher rate of cases reported for psychological and verbal abuse. 14 such cases were investigated.

Statistics released by Gender Ministry shows that 21 cases of physical abuse and 17 cases of neglect were also reported. There were also cases of psychological abuse directed at the child and cases of children witnessing domestic abuse.

There were 3 reported cases of bullying by other children including one instance of bullying via internet.

While there was one case of a child not wanting to attend school brought to the Ministry’s attention, 5 cases were lodged due to children being kept from receiving an education in February alone.

Two children were taken into state custody in February 2021 adding up to 224 children now in state custody.
