105 child abuse cases filed in January 2022

Malé, Maldives – Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services revealed on Sunday that 105 child abuse cases were filed at the ministry in January 2022.

The 105 cases include sexual abuse (20), physical abuse (14), emotional abuse (10), negligence (20), exploitation (6), harassment (11), child labour (3) and witnessing domestic violence (21).

Statistics shows that out of the 71 ‘Violence against children’ cases that were reported, 41 cases were of 41 girls and the remaining was of 30 boys.

Gender Ministry was also reported of multiple other cases regarding children in January 2022. These include 13 cases that were reported for violating the rights of children, of which 2 cases were related to birth registration, 4 regarding acquiring national ID cards/passports/birth certificates and 7 for failure to provide safe drinking water and electricity.

Gender Ministry informs that in January 2022, 6 children were taken to State Care while eight were reintegrated with families. At present, there are a total of 195 children under State care in the Maldives.
