Malé, Maldives – Former President and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed stated that not casting votes for the Local Council Election and Women’s Development Committees (WDC) election, does not necessarily solve anything.
Speaker Nasheed talked to news reporters about the ongoing election process, and said that the best way to participate in making decisions for our country is to vote. He implored everyone to cast their votes today. This was due to the less number of votes casted in Malé up until now.
Elections Commission (EC) has stated that up to 1pm today, only 32% of eligible people have voted.
Not casting your vote is not a solution. Your vote is your share in developing the country. The constitution states that it is your right to vote.

Speaker Nasheed noted that even in past council elections, the rate of casting votes in Malé was low. Only 40% of people vote, he said. Speaker Nasheed added that the decrease was due to the people not trusting the councils. He further added that this government would try its hardest to decentralize and work with councils to gain this lost trust.
People will learn to like decentralization only when they see a good example of it.

Speaker Nasheed traveled in a cycle to various part of Malé to find out how the voting process was going on, and even stopped by to talk to some people along the way.
