Addu City, Maldives – Outgoing Addu City Mayor Abdulla Sodiq has said that Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) did not lose in Addu City.
Speaking to local news “Avas” with regards to the Local Council Elections (LCE) held yesterday, the current MDP Mayor Sodiq said that MDP still has majority in Addu City.
For instance, it was be said that MDP was defeated in Malé city, however, Addu still has MDP majority, so cannot say MDP was defeated.
Mayor Sodiq said that the internal competition within the party and the MDP primary not being executed properly were some of the main factors for losing the super majority in Addu city.
Preliminary results show that MDP won 53% of the Addu city council while losing the Feydhoo district seats to opposition.
In the previous three elections, MDP has won all seats in the city council resulting in 100% super majority. However, this election, the opposition party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has won three seats in the council while three seats were won by independent candidates.
MDP candidate Ali Nizar is the mayor elect of Addu City. According to figures received last night by ‘The Times of Addu’, Nizar has got 1,443 votes while PPM candidate Latheef had gotten 1,018 votes. Independent candidate Ibrahim Thohir got 61 votes.
In a primary election held on 31 January 2020 to allocate the ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) ticket to contest in the council elections, former Parliament Member of Hithadhoo Dhekunu constituency Ali Nizar with a staggering difference of 1532 votes by defeating the 3 term mayor Abdulla Sodiq.
The outgoing Mayor said that he is happy with the council member’s work during his term.
