Investigation of attack on Nasheed will be given highest priority: Minister Imran

Malé, Maldives – Home Minister Imran Abdullah said that the investigation of the attempted assassination attack on Former President and Current Speaker of the Parliament of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed would be highly prioritized.

The explosion which went off around 20:20 tonight left Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed injured while he was getting in to his car near his house, G. Kenereege, Malé City. In addition to him, 3 more people have also been reported to be injured from the explosion

Minister Imran also condemned the attack on Speaker Nasheed tweeting that the police must give utmost importance to this case. Minister Imran also visited ADK hospital where Nasheed is being treated along with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and several members of the public. Although a curfew was imposed in Malé at the time, a large crowd gathered near the hospital.

The attack on Speaker Nasheed was strictly condemned by several other parties including the PPM/PNC opposition coalition in which the called out to find the perpetrators and strictly punish them.

In addition to this, the Parliament was also convened for an urgent sitting in which Eva Abdullah said that the sitting would continue until an update on the Speaker’s health was received.

Glass windows of the nearby shops were also shattered with the big blow and several nearby vehicles as well as bystanders were injured. With the attack, Maldives Police Service and Maldives National Defence Force have been brought to alert with alert levels increased.
