Surgeries done on Speaker Nasheed successful, one more to go: ADK

Malé, Maldives – ADK Hospital has stated that the surgeries done on former President and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed were successful and that one more essential surgery is to be done.

Speaker Nasheed was injured in an explosion which went off around 20:20 last night while he was getting in to his car near his house, G. Kenereege, Malé City. In addition to him, 3 more people, including his bodyguard, have also been reported to be injured from the explosion.

ADK Hospital tweeted last night that Speaker Nasheed was brought to the hospital at 20:30 and was being treated by a multi specialty medical team. His vitals are stable, they said.

According to local media “CNM”, the first surgery was done on his head and the second was done on his lungs and heart to remove sharp bits which had penetrated in to his body during the blast.

Following the CT scans two pieces of sharp bits had been removed from his lungs and another surgery was done on his abdomen following the injuries he received. In addition to this, media reports state that part of his rib cage was broken as well. These surgeries took more than the approximated seven hours to do.

Police stated that their investigation suggests that the explosion of last night, was a direct attack towards Speaker Nasheed. Police added that they are using all the forensic equipments needed for the case, and that help was being given from Australian Federal Police and England.
