Malé, Maldives – Ministry of Islamic Affairs has stated that the last date for giving Zakat al-Fitr is tomorrow.
Islamic Ministry stated today that in the Greater Malé region the latest time for giving Zakat al-Fitr is before 6pm tomorrow. Previously, the last date for giving Zakat al-Fitr was today.
Islamic Minister Dr. Ahmed Zahir Ali stated that compared to other years, the number of people who are to give Zakat al-Fitr are less this year. This year, Zakat al-Fitr can be given in grains as well as money.
Zakat al-Fitr, or the Zakat of Breaking the Fast of Ramadan, is the special obligatory alms paid by all Muslims at the end of the Ramadan fasting month, to be distributed among the poor.
The minimum amount due is the equivalent of 2.4 kilograms of wheat flour, rice, or other staple food, per member of the household. The ministry stated online payments will be accepted through Ooredoo, Dhiraagu, Bank of Maldives (BML), Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) and the Fahi Pay application. Cash payments are accepted at the Islamic Ministry in Male’, and at the respective local councils in the atolls.
Last year, MVR 1,942,201 was given as Zakat al-Fitr in Ramadan.
