BREAKING: MP Easa resigns as Chair of Social Affairs Committee

Malé, Maldives – MP Easa, accused of domestic violence has resigned as the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Social Affairs, while maintaining that there is no wrongdoing on his part.

MP Easa released a statement saying that he resigns from the post following the allegations and that he fully cooperates with the police and relevant authorities. He also assured the public and especially the people of his constituency that goes against the constitution, rules and regulations of the Maldives.

The Social Affairs Committee were to attend the meeting for Chairperson Easa’s dismissal this morning, however was called off for today due to not enough member’s attending to fulfil quorum requirements for a vote to be taken. This is why Easa remained as the Chairperson before resigning a while ago.

The Parliament Social Affairs committee members include, Vice Chairperson, MP Hussain Firushan of Madaveli constituency, MP Mohamed Rasheed of North Mahchangolhi, MP Mohamed Shifau of Ihavandhoo constituency, MP Mohamed Raai of Makunudhoo constituency, MP Mohamed Shahid of Funadhoo constituency, MP Ismail Ahmed of Dhuvaafaru constituency, MP Jeehan Mahmood of Hinnavaru constituency belonging to MDP and MP Hussain Mohamed Latheef of Faresmaathoda constituency from PPM.

The Human Rights Commission (HRC) of Maldives has stated that they will be monitoring the investigation while Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has filed a request for the arrest warrant for MP Easa earlier today. Maldives Police Service (MPS) started to investigate the domestic violence case against MP Easa on the night of 18 May 2021.

According to his neighbours, the case against him was filed for attacking his wife Asra Naeem (Asoo) who is also the younger sister of Vice President of Maldives, Faisal Naseem.

While Maldivian Democratic Party’s parliamentarian Ahmed Easa has refused to comment on the matter, local media have reported that MPS had attended the scene during the night of the incident and his wife had received treatment at the hospital for the injuries. 

Maldives Police Service had not revealed further details but ‘The Times of Addu’ has confirmed that the case was lodged last night and that Asra has given her statement against MDP MP Easa.
