Malé, Maldives – The President’s Office has today opened applications for the position of Auditor General.

Application forms can be downloaded from the President’s Office website at www.presidencymaldives.gov.mv. Applications will be accepted from the President’s Office on the 6 and 7 June 2021 from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm.

The position of Auditor General was opened due to the resignation of the former Auditor General Hassan Ziyath. He had resigned due to his name being on the list of people who were involved in the MMPRC corruption case. However, he had defended himself by saying that the only reason he was on the list was because he accepted the money that the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) gave him for the campaign of Parliament Elections.

In the resignation letter Ziyath sent to the president, he stated that by having his name on the list, the whole institutions integrity and honor would be questioned and that he resigns as it would be done by anyone who gets implicated in such an issue in a civilized society.

Ziyath who was appointed as Auditor General in 2014 during President Yameen’s administration, had served as the chairman of Housing Development Corporation (HDC).

The MMPRC Corruption case list which was published by Joint Committee of Parliament consisting of the National Security Services committee (commonly known as 241 committee) and Judiciary committee regarding the major MMPRC corruption case, included 281 individuals who are being investigated by the Asset Recovery Commission, with the commission’s stamp.

The report also includes an unaltered list of 119 employees of the state complicit in the MMPRC corruption, which included former Auditor General Ziyath.
