MayTerrorAttack: MDP selects committee to oversee investigation

Malé, Maldives – The Steering Committee of Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has selected a committee named “May 6 Committee” to oversee the investigation of attempted assassination of Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on May 6, 2021.

The motion to appoint a committee to overlook the May 6 terror attack was sponsored by MP of Ungoofaaru Constituency Mohamed Waheed and was supported by MP of Makunudhoo Constituency Ahmed Mausoom at last night’s MDP Steering Committee meeting.

The motion was passed with the vote of 100 out of the 109 members present at last night’s meeting. While no members voted against it, 9 members did not take part in the vote.

The Committee initially was to include a member selected by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as well. However, this post was later removed at the request of President Solih. The Committee currently includes;

  • Member appointed by Speaker Nasheed
  • MP of Villifushi Constituency Hassan Afeef
  • MP of Fonadhoo Constituency Moosa Siraj
  • MP of North Henveyru Constituency Ibrahim Muizzu
  • Former Defence Minister Ameen Faisal

The members of the Committee will undertake the responsibility of overlooking the investigation of the relevant authorities into the May 6 terror attack against Speaker Nasheed.

MDP Steering Committee also passed a motion sponsored by President of Kudahuvadhoo Constituency Sathir Abdul Rahmaan to hold a weekly Committee meeting to reveal the progress made by the May 6 Committee. Following the approval of this motion, MDP Chairperson Hassan Latheef said that necessary arrangements will be made to hols weekly meetings to discuss the committee progress.

The MDP meeting started last night at 21:00 and finished off around 00:30. 111 members took part in the meeting out of which 47 members addressed the congress.

Addressing the MDP meeting, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Eva Abdullah said that we must not forget this lethal attack against Speaker Nasheed and that his life was saved with the grace of God. She added that Speaker Nasheed worked for the people his entire life as he continues to do today and that they must not hesitate to get justice for Speaker Nasheed.

Members of this party will advocate for Nasheed’s justice. This attack was not just against Speaker Nasheed, but was a lethal blow on national security. This party will not back down unless Speaker Nasheed gets justice.

In addition to this, MP of North Maafannu Constituency Imthiyaaz Fahumy said that the reaction from the government is not even close to the actual seriousness of the attack. He noted that an appropriate action has not been taken by the government since the attack and that their actions are supporting radicalists.

MP Imthiyaaz further went on to criticize the MDP members who voted to dismiss the case of Deputy Defence Minister Hassan Zameel which was submitted to the Parliamentary Ethics Committee for refusal to corporate with 241 Committee’s investigation.

This party’s members did that. I do not accept this at all and highly convict this. I am ashamed to be on the same team as these people wearing the same uniform

MP of North Maafannu Constituency Imthiyaaz Fahumy

Chairperson of Parliamentary Committee on National Security Mohamed Aslam said that only a limited amount of information can be revealed for the 241 Committee investigation and that Police os fully coorporating to reveal the required information. He noted that additional information is also being given to other members of the committee.

MP Aslam further stated that the report of 241 Committee inquiry will clearly state all the information and that the investigation is going well. He also requested the members to coorporate with the investigative authorities.

The police is also currently investigating the cause behind the attack on the Former President. 4 individuals have been arrested so far, all of them indicating radicalisation. The Parliamentary Committee is investigating into the security breach of the Speaker following the terror attack.

Speaker Nasheed still remains in Germany after he was released from the German medical hospital on May 21, where he went for recovery and rehabilitation for the injuries suffered in the May 6, 2021 assassination attempt on him. According to his family, he will remain in Germany for a month before returning back to Maldives.

The IED explosion went off around 20:20 on 6 May leaving Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed critically injured while he was getting in to his car near his house, G. Kenereege, Malé City. In addition to him, 3 more people were also been reported to be injured from the explosion including the Speaker’s bodyguards and bystanders.

Nasheed was taken to ADK with heavy bleeding, and both internal and external shrapnel injuries. Ball bearings were found in Nasheed’s chest, near the heart. Injuries caused by these projectiles caused life threatening damage to the chest area. Nasheed endured major injury to the fourth rib, with a blade going through a lung. A projectile also went through his intestine with another near his liver.

Speaker Nasheed was treated at the Critical Care Unit of ADK hospital in Malé until he was airlifted to Germany on May 13, 2021 for recovery and rehabilitation. Parliament had previously revealed that Speaker Nasheed’s medical expenses in Germany is being covered by Honorary Consul of Maldives in Germany, Christian Von Stetten.
