Malé, Maldives – Maldives Police Service has started an investigation into the sale of women’s personal information including photos, phone numbers and Snapchat accounts.

Spokesperson of the President’s Office Mabrook Azeez tweeted last night saying that Maldives Police Service started investigating the case of a group trying to sell personal information of women, although no details into the matter were revealed by him.

Multiple individuals took to social media, revealing identities of several persons involved in the leak, which is normally said to take place in Telegram groups. However, it is yet to be specified which specific cases the Police are investigating.

Similar cases of leaking people’s personal information on social media groups have been said to be reported to the Police in the past as well, although not much has been done to put a stop to it, allowing such acts to still continue to this day. Even the the current statements regarding Police investigating into the case also comes after public outcries on social media condoning such actions.
