Malé, Maldives – Former Chief Editor of Sun Ahmed Zahir (Hiriga) is elected as the President of the Editors Guild of Maldives.
Zahir was elected with no contest as the President of the organization through an online election conducted to determine the Steering Committee of the Editors Guild.
While Zahir is elected as the President for the term, he served as the first President of Editor’s Guild and is a founding member and the first President of the Maldives Journalist Association (MJA).
Ahmed Zahir is an advocate for independent media in the Maldives, awarded with the Diamond Pen of Journalism for his service to the media industry in the country.
The referendum elected seven posts of the Editors Guild for a three year term including two Vice Presidents; Academic and Administrative, Ali Shammaan of The Press and Sinan Ali of One Online respectively with nine votes. The Managing Editor of Mihaaru, Ismail Naseer was chosen as the Secretary-General, while Midhuhath Adam, Editor of Ras Online as Treasurer. Mohamed Asif (Mondhu) and Ibrahim Umar Manik were both chosen to represent retired journalists.
The Editors Guild consists of senior journalists with more than a decade of experience, and current editors of Maldives media organizations.
