Malé, Maldives — Foreign Minister of Maldives, Abdullah Shahid has returned to Maldives after a two month trip in the United States.

Late April, Minister Shahid flew to America to campaign for his candidature for the President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. On June 10, Minister Shahid won the election with 143 votes, out of a total of 191 votes cast.

As traveling in and out of the country was risky and difficult due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Minister Shahid remained at America until the election was over.

This is the first time the Maldives has presented a candidate for the Presidency of the General Assembly. The victory meant that the Maldives will be only the sixth President from a Small Island Developing State, presiding over the UN General Assembly in the history of the United Nations.

While Minister Shahid will have to spend more time on America for the new term that is set to commence on 14 September 2021, and is likely to have several responsibilities on his shoulder until his Presidency ends within a year’s period, Minister Shahid assured that his responsibilities as a Foreign Minister of Maldives will not be neglected.

With the return of Minister Shahid to the country, Foreign Ministry announced that Minister Shahid will have to go back to America before the new term begins on September, however, they have not set an official date for departure yet.
