PGO prosecutes expat caretaker for abusing patient at Hulhumalé Covid-19 Facility

Hulhumalé, Maldives – Prosecutor General’s Office on Tuesday, decided to prosecute the expatriate caretaker who was caught on video, abusing an old aged man admitted at Hulhumalé Medical Facility.

The caretaker is charged under the Article 120 (a) and (b) of the Maldives Penal Code on the 29 June 2021 at Hulhumalé Magistrate Court.

From the video leaked on social media, the caretaker can be seen hitting the elderly person after which the patient starts to cry.

The Bangladeshi citizen Sharif Khan was seen hitting an old man admitted at Hulhumalé Medical Facility on May 26. He was appointed as the caretaker of the patient by the patient’s family. He was immediately removed from the premise as the video started to circulate through social media.

The Prosecutor General’s Office stated that charges of doing harm to someone were raised against the expat and that the case was sent to Hulhumalé Magistrate. The court decided to detain the alleged until the end of investigation as requested by the PG.

According to local media sources, families have been appointing caretakers for their elderly parents who have been admitted at Hulhumalé Medical Facility.This case has surfaced while many people have been passing away due to Covid-19 who have been admitted at Hulhumalé Medical Facility and its case has been sent to Maldives Parliament
