Transport Ministry releases guidelines for foreigners to obtain driving licenses without any test

Male’, Maldives – Transport Ministry, today, revealed information on the process for foreigners to obtain a driving license in the Maldives without any tests.

In their guidelines released today, the Transport Ministry stated that foreigners requesting for a license to drive in the Maldives must submit their driving licenses from a country on the approved list, a copy of their passport and work permit, along with MVR 250 as a license fee.

The legitimacy of the submitted license will be verified online and for those that are not available for online verification, an embassy letter must be submitted.

According to the fourth amendment brought to the Land Transportation Act of Maldives, Transport Ministry previously informed that they have decided to issue driving licenses to license holders from 25 countries without a driving test.

The approved countries include Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, United Kingdom, United States of America, China, United Arab Emirates, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Belgium and Germany

From South Asian countries, Bangladesh is notably missing from the list.

For foreign residents with driving licenses that are issued by countries not on the list, they must take the driving test in the Maldives.
