Tourism Ministry explores routes for inbound tourists to the South bypassing VIA

Male’, Maldives – Tourism Ministry of Maldives informs that they are searching for a way to bring tourists to the Southern region of the Maldives without using the Velana International Airport (VIA) located in the capital city Malé area.

While Tourism Minister Abdullah Mausoom is currently on an official trip to widen the tourism sector in the South of Maldives, from Addu City till Huvadhoo, he has visited the tourism properties in Huvadhoo, Addu and in Fuvahmulah with industry stakeholders. He was accompanied by mayors of the Southern City Councils and some parliament members as well.

Speaking about the trip, Minister Mausoom state that the main aim of the trip is to find opportunities to increase the tourism industry in the Southern Maldives.

Want to find a way to operate Southern as an independent tourism zone. A way to carry out tourism without including VIA.

The trip was also participated by several tour operators, higher authorities of tourism companies and representatives of tourism associations.

Noting that there are about 3,000-5,000 beds in the area, CEO of Resort Life, Mohamed Shaaz Waleed stated that the Southern area has great potential for the tourism sector and that a proper transport infrastructure is what they need.
