Male’, Maldives – President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Tuesday night, made an impassioned declaration that he would not stand by and let the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), present-day ruling political party, be destroyed.

He did not make any further clarifications with regard to whom or which factions were working to destroy the party and its various activities.

President Solih made the aforementioned statement whilst speaking at a meeting held with the MDP members of Th. Thimarafushi during his official visit to Thaa Atoll.

As one of key leaders within MDP, President Solih stated that while he wished to remain as a member of the party and he would not allow it to be destoyed.

Noting that more events need to be held to further the party and bolster its aspirations, the President also offered assurances that he would provide all the assistance required for the construction of a dedicated MDP office based in Thimarafushi.

President Solih’s impassioned statement comes at a time when the current President of MDP, Mohamed Nasheed has publicly stated that he can no longer work with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the political field.

The former president’s standing in contrast to the incumbent president has paved the way for further dissent amongst other party representatives as well as various other leading and grass-root members.

Although he has been involved with the party from its beginning stages, initial efforts do not indicate President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as being a founding member of MDP.
