Maldives Criminal Court sentences man to flogging for alcohol consumption

Malé, Maldives – The Criminal Court of Maldives, on Tuesday, sentenced a man to flogging after he pleaded guilty to alcohol consumption.

The man was initially arrested under suspicion of drug use and sale on 4 March 2020. However, the suspect pleaded guilty to alcohol consumption during the preliminary stage of the trial.

Considering this, the Chief Judge of Criminal Court Ahmed Shakeel showed leniency and sentenced the suspect to 9 days imprisonment and flogging 40 times, as opposed to the standard sentence of 1 month 6 days imprisonment and 40 times flogging.

The court granted time served for the convict after considering the time in remand. The suspect must be flogged 40 times to complete the full sentence.
