Petitions Committee to check the condition of drug rehabilitation centers in Maldives

Male’, Maldives – Parliament’s Petitions Committee has decided to check the condition of the rehabilitation centers in Maldives to investigate the “Change NDA 2020” petition presented to the Parliament by MP for Machchangolhi South constituency, Ahmed Haitham.

A statement released by the Petitions Committee informed that the Committee began investigating the petition on March 31, 2021. After discussions with the Committee members, the statement read that the Petition Committee has decided to visit and check the condition of the National Drug Agency (NDA) and the rehabilitation centers that are operating under it.

While Committee members have already visited the Halfway House in Hulhumale along with the Drug Rehabilitation Centers in GDh. Thinadhoo, N. Fuvahmulah, S. Hithadhoo, HDh. Hanimaadhoo and K. Himmafushi, the statement informed that the Committee has decided to also visit the Drug Offenders Remand Center in K. Gulhi and the Main center of NDA in capital Male’ city.

The “Change NDA 2020” petition was presented to the parliament with 1050 signatures after much criticism was pointed at the NDA. Public has multiple times called onto change the NDA board and to further improve the services that are being provided at the rehabilitation centers of Maldives.
