Fuad Thaufeeq appointed as President of the Elections Commission

Malé, Maldives – Fuad Thaufeeq was elected as the President of the Elections Commission (EC) on Wednesday.

The position remained vacant since June 15 after the former EC President Ahmed Shareef resigned.

Thaufeeq, who had previously served as the EC President from 2009 to 2013 when was removed from office in a suo moto case initiated by the Supreme Court. At the time Thaufeeq called the ruling bizarre and obstructed the constitutionally mandated duty of the elections commission.

Thaufeeq was voted for President of EC with the unanimous vote of EC members and gained approval by parliament by 70 votes.

As the new President of EC, Thaufeeq states that he will implement a five year strategic plan and use his vast experience to advance the commission.
