Police investigate sex abuse of minor in Huvadhoo Atoll

Gaafu Alif Atoll, Maldives – Maldives Police have started investigating a sexual assault case of a minor in the Upper South Division of Maldives.

According to the Police, the case was filed on 23 August 2021 in the Southern Division covering Gaafu Alif and Gaafu Dhaal yesterday of a 17 year old being sexually abused. The perpetrator is allegedly a teacher.

Police state that they take sexual offences against minors very seriously.

There has been an increase in sex abuse cases against children in the southern region. On September 14, a similar case was lodged with the Addu City Police, the perpetrator allegedly a police officer, leading to protests in the city.

Police used physical violence and pepper spray against protestors. The policeman in question has since been suspended.

Earlier this year, Police confirmed that on March 11, a case was filed of an underage schoolgirl who was drugged and raped by multiple men in the northern region of Maldives instigated by a teacher.

Protests took place in front of the northern island Police Station at the time, with the police arresting 10 protestors after pepperspraying the crowd. The local islander took to the street in protest the next day following this, holding signs against rape and asking for justice.
