Man arrested for child sex abuse in Southern city

Addu City, Maldives – Maldives Police today said that a 42 year old man has been arrested in the South Police Division for the sexual abuse of a 13 year old.

The case of a child being abused in the Southern Division of Fuvahmulah and Addu City was reported to the police on 23 September 2021.

The suspect has been taken into custody until a remand is set.

Police are investigating the matter further.

Recently there has been a rise in sex crimes against children in the south, with the police disclosing information of three such cases in September 2021.

Police are investigating the case of a 17 year old being sexually abused by a teacher in the Upper South Division. An Indian teacher teaching at a school in Huvadhoo atoll was arrested last night in relation to the crime.

On September 14, a similar case was lodged with the Addu City Police, the perpetrator allegedly a police officer, leading to protests in the city.

Police used physical violence and pepper spray against protestors. The policeman in question has since been suspended.
