MP Rozaina to question Tourism Minister about closed resorts in Addu City

Malé, Maldives – MP for Meedhoo Constituency Rozaina Ahmed today requested to question the Tourism Minister Abdulla Mausoom at the Maldives Parliament regarding the closed luxury resorts in Addu City.

In her notice, MP Rozaina said that the two major resorts in Addu City, Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort & Spa and Canareef Resort remain closed leaving the locals in desperate conditions due to joblessness.

The Meedhoo MP noted that Tourism Ministry were given multiple opportunities to reopen the resorts in Addu, however, have yet to succeed.

MP Rozaina said that the Tourism Minister must provide a scheduled date for the reopening and explain formal reasons why the resorts remain closed.

With the despair in Addu City, the government also cancelled the World Tourism Day celebrations which were supposed to be a colourful joyous occasion for the city.

Regarding this, the Tourism Minister on Tuesday said that while some say that the Covid-19 situation is the reason for cancelling the World Tourism Day 2021 celebration in Addu City, the real reason is the sadness of the Addu people due to the indefinite shut down of the tourist resorts.
