Malé, Maldives – President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that business owners will be included in the discussion to allocate minimum wages.

President Solih said this during a meeting with the farmers and guesthouse operators in AA. Thoddoo during his tour of AA. Atoll.

The President stated that since the allocation of minimum wage is a decision that affects both the employers and employees, both sides will be taken into consideration when making the decision.

The minimum wages proposed by the Wage Advisory Board to the Economic Minister for approval includes,

  • MVR 5,700 for daily 8 hours of work for small business employees.
  • MVR 7,000 for daily 6 hours of work for permanent Civil Service employees.
  • MVR 8,000 for medium business employees.
  • MVR 8,900 for large business employees.

The minimum wages for Maldivians will go into effect starting 1 January 2022 upon the approval of the Economic Minister. A moratorium is to be declared for the minimum wage for migrant workers until the economy is recovered to pre Covid-19 status.
