Malé, Maldives – The entire female janitorial staff have been suspended following sexual abuse of a preschooler by a “toilet dhatha.”

Police confirmed on October 16 that a student has been sexually abused at a school in the capital city Malé.

The child has identified the perpetrator as a female janitorial staff or “toilet dhatha” who take young children to the toilet at the school.

While the school previously suspended two of the janitorial staff working on the same floor as the child’s classroom, the child’s parents raise concerns for the students’ safety since the child’s teacher is unable to remember the staff in question and the child states that she was abused on a different floor. There were no CCTV cameras at the school.

The Galolhu School now states that they have suspended all female janitorial staff amid public outrage and installed CCTV cameras in 18 locations.
