Malé, Maldives – The Parliament of Maldives has scheduled a special sitting for tomorrow to dismiss the members of the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).

The meeting held at 10:00 will discuss the dismissal of all members of ACC as recommended by Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions on Thursday. The special sitting was scheduled as a motion presented by the Speaker of the Parliament.

The members of the ACC voted to dismiss are, ACC President Mariyam Shiuna, Vice President Aminath Anoola, members Ibrahim Shakeel and Aishath Abdulla. he fifth member of the ACC Ali Ashraf resigned earlier this month.

The decision to dismiss all the incumbent members of the ACC was made following a performance audit amid public criticism of delayed corruption investigations.

Transparency Maldives has released a statement regarding the independent committee recommendation, statin gthat the decision to dismiss all members of ACC at the same time will create a vaccuum in a key accountability institutuion and will profoundly impact ongoing cases causing delay in accountability for corruption.

The NGO further stated that threats of dismissals and acts of intimidation by politicians and parliamentarians over the years have been direct attempts to influence the work of independent institutions. The President of ACC Mariyam Shiuna has echoed these sentiments in March 2021 following a dismissal vote in the parliament.
