Complaints remain unresolved with the absence of commission members: ACC

Malé, Maldives – The media official of the Anti Corruption Commission has stated that while the registrar registers complaints, there is nothing else to be done at the absence of commission members.

The ACC media official stated this while speaking to local news “Addulive” regarding the Komandoo land reclamation project by the government ahead of the bi-election on Saturday. While the ACC media official confirmed that the issue was submitted to the ACC on 19 January 2021, the official stated that there is little to be done.

The complaint is submitted as an attempt to manipulate the election by using a project that was not budgeted. Multiple accusations have been thrown at the incumbent government regarding projects commenced in the Komandoo constituency.

The members of ACC resigned on 27 December 2021 after the Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions recommended to dismiss all members of ACC.

Anti Corruption NGO Transparency Maldives had previously called out the possibility of a vacuum in a key accountability institution with the dismissal of ACC members and the profound impact on ongoing cases and the potential delay in accountability for corruption.
