Criminal Court remands 86 percent detainees in 2021

Malé, Maldives – Statistics released by the Criminal Court of Maldives show that remand was granted for 86 percent of cases heard in the year 2021.

According to the data, 2,722 cases were filed at the court regarding remand, of which the court granted remand for 86 percent of the suspects with only 14 percent suspects released.

The Criminal Court statistics further show that 49 percent of scheduled hearings were cancelled due to various reasons.

9,973 hearings were scheduled with 4,852 cancelled. 5,121 were held as scheduled.

While 1,732 unfinished cases were transferred over from 2020 to 2021, 1,804 cases were incomplete by the end of 2021. 773 cases were filed to the court in 2021 with 701 being completed.

1,529 court orders were released, majority of which were search warrants. Requests for 405 search warrants, 399 arrest warrants and 112 passport seizures were filed at the Criminal Court in the year 2021.
